Laura O’Connor working methodology
Define what kind of visual research I am undertaking..
Lay out a strategy for ‘internet’ based research.. how is it quantifiable? How can you measure… if you can’t measure then it is in the practice where the results are..
What results are you looking for in the research project?
It is to analyse and critique practices of feminist art in contemporary online society… Particular art practices that are responding to the self-produced feminine identities displayed on social media.
The enquiry is into how these practices are subverting the ‘norm’ by recreating the norm… look at scourti’s clown…parody… Louise Orwin in terms of failure... Ann Hirsch in terms of sexual, promiscuous, expose, confessional, diaristic … Lynn Hershman in terms of voyeuristic
So could this be laid out in terms of different types of subversion?... look at my own work in terms of each category and bring in one other artist to each category?
Mirror each of these acts/practices/ performances to real life situations of performance… Thesis will have a dualistic theme running through it… the maintenance and the productive… the self and the other…the simulation and the ‘real’ body… as the project moves I can explore where possible crossovers take place… the subversion becoming the norm and vice versa… this will bring in a psychoanalytic lacanian discussion which can cross into deleuzion schizo terratorialist issue…
To think of the project as a type of investigation in to contemporary voyeurism… self exposed, specific to young women this need to document and record everyday activities.. and to share them with the world…
The selfie is a category of this… the selfie video is an extension of the image and an expose of vulnerability not seen as much in still images
